Sony Project
When Steve McMurphy of Wirtz Quality Installations Inc. set out to tile the kitchen on the top floor of the new 11-story Sony Electronics Headquarters in Rancho Bernardo, California, he quickly discovered one major issue that needed to be addressed.
The concern was that Sony Electronics’ top executive offices were situated directly below the kitchen on the 10th floor, and McMurphy would need to create a specification including some form of sound control to ensure a peaceful working environment. McMurphy’s first inclination was to opt for a cork underlayment for this 7,000 square foot (650 square meters) floating tile floor installation. Shortly thereafter, however, he realized the framing provided only 7/8" (22 mm) in depth to work with and needed a new plan. It simply was not possible to fit a full mortar bed, the cork underlayment and the ceramic tiles all in that space at the right thickness.
Fortunately for everyone involved, Wirtz Quality Installations, based in San Diego, was a member of the LATICRETE Most Valued Partner (MVP) program, and the 50-plus year manufacturer of tile and stone installation materials had just the right product for the Sony Electronics kitchen.
